An apartment in Rome balancing history and modernity

An apartment in Rome balancing history and modernity

Nestled in the prestigious Trieste district of Rome, this 240-square-meter apartment epitomizes the seamless fusion of tradition and modernity. Architect Mariella Paciolla, in collaboration with Mohd, crafted a design that preserves the historical integrity of the building—including its high ceilings and arched windows—while introducing a refined contemporary minimalism.

The main challenge was blending the apartment’s old-world charm with the modern lifestyle of a young professional couple, seeking both functionality and historical allure. The design strategy centered around a rational layout, enriched by luxurious materials such as marble, wood, and exquisite fabrics, all elegantly complemented by innovative glass and metal elements.

From bespoke furniture to a delicate palette of whites, beiges, and grays, every detail was meticulously designed to cultivate an atmosphere of understated elegance.

The result is a harmonious dialogue between past and present, creating a home that honors its historical roots while embracing modern sophistication in one of Rome’s most exclusive neighborhoods.

The entrance to this Roman residence strikes a perfect balance between classic elegance and modern sensibility. A striking floor pattern of Crema Perla and Nero Marquinia marble draws the eye inward, leading guests toward the heart of the home.

The crisp white walls, adorned with architectural accents, contrast beautifully with the bold black openings, adding depth and a serene sense of stillness.

At the center of the room, the Tube Chandelier by Michael Anastassiades floats like a sculptural masterpiece, its sleek modern lines perfectly attuned to the classic ambiance.

A minimalist round table anchors the space, offering a touch of contemporary restraint while allowing the design to shine without overpowering the room.

The fireplace room is a showcase of light and sophistication, with high ceilings and soft tones that enhance the natural light, creating an inviting and airy ambiance. Every detail of the interior design strikes a perfect balance between modernity and comfort while maintaining a strong connection to the home’s classic elegance.

At the heart of the living area is the Gio sofa by Hessentia Cornelio Cappellini, with its soft, welcoming shapes. Moroso’s Pacific armchairs, upholstered in bouclé wool, add a rich texture, harmoniously complementing the refined simplicity of the Walter armchairs by Molteni&C.

The marble fireplace, a striking focal point, defines the space, while Salvatori’s Avola stone coffee table offers a discreet, central gathering place.

The room exudes understated refinement, where each design piece contributes to the overall aesthetic, creating an enduring sense of elegance.

Wrapped in deep shades of blue and gray, the relaxation room offers an intimate, enveloping retreat, perfect for moments of leisure and contemplation. The wood paneling, accentuated by soft lighting, adds warmth and comfort, setting an elegant backdrop for a design that blends contemporary style with rich historical undertones.

At the heart of the space is Living Divani’s Extrasoft sofa, its generous, modular forms inviting relaxation and sociability. The dark blue velvet upholstery deepens the room’s atmosphere, adding a sense of exclusivity without overwhelming the space.

Complementing it is the D.153.1 armchair by Molteni&C., a tribute to the Italian design master Gio Ponti, beautifully combining refinement with ergonomic comfort.

The attention to detail is evident in the choice of complementary furnishings, such as the small tables in warm tones, which introduce a subtle contrast and balance the room’s color palette with an elegant play of hues. Each element is meticulously arranged, crafting an environment that invites you to unwind and indulge in intimate, timeless luxury.

The dining room is a visually captivating space where minimalist elegance meets contemporary design, highlighting the purity of forms and materials. At its center is the table designed by the architect, with its geometric and precise silhouette serving as the focal point, creating a refined and functional atmosphere for dining.

Agapecasa’s black Tre 3 chairs, with their clean lines, form a striking contrast to Cassina’s Dudet armchairs, upholstered in soft white bouclé wool, adding warmth and comfort to the setting.

Above, the Dussa chandelier by Aromas del Campo, with its sleek modern design, casts a warm, diffused light that perfectly complements the room’s sophisticated character.

The neutral color palette is enriched by a vibrant touch of blue on the wall, adding depth and highlighting the thoughtful balance of art and design. Every element in the room is carefully curated to achieve an aesthetic that masterfully combines formal precision with refined hospitality.

The kitchen stands out for its understated elegance and meticulous attention to detail, perfectly balancing functionality with sophisticated design.

The prominently veined marble, covering the countertop, adds a timeless touch, reflecting the natural light that floods the space and creating a sense of visual lightness. Sleek, modern surfaces are seamlessly integrated with the classic charm of white frames and paneling, blending past and present into a cohesive aesthetic.

Verpan’s 430 stools, upholstered in blue velvet, introduce a vibrant pop of color, contrasting beautifully with the dark wood furnishings and providing sophisticated comfort for a premium dining experience. Above the central island, CVL Luminaires’ Cornet lamps, with their sculptural forms and refined materials, cast a warm, diffused light, enhancing the room’s welcoming ambiance.

Every element in this kitchen is thoughtfully designed to ensure maximum comfort and practicality without compromising elegance. The result is a harmonious space where design and functionality coexist in perfect balance.

The bedroom is an intimate retreat, where elegance and comfort merge to create a tranquil haven. The Maxalto Filemone bed, with its clean lines and bouclé fabric upholstery, offers an inviting sense of softness and warmth.

A neutral color palette of creamy whites and beige tones enhances the serene atmosphere, making it the perfect setting for restful rejuvenation.

Flanking the bed are 101 Copenhagen’s Column side tables, adding a touch of minimalist design, while Schwung’s Odyssey wall lamps cast soft, warm light, creating gentle plays of light that enrich the room without overwhelming it.

In the reading corner, the Lato coffee table by &Tradition—a harmonious blend of sculptural form and visual lightness—is paired with a simply designed armchair that invites relaxation. The warmth of the herringbone-laid parquet flooring, together with these thoughtfully curated elements, defines the room’s strong yet measured character, full of nuanced details and unique charm.
