Thanks to Talenti, Acerbis has identified a new type of structure, halfway between architecture and furniture to create shade and define the space.
Among the winners of the 2024 Compasso d’Oro there is also Marco Acerbis for his MrX project produced by Talenti. “I believe that design should not only be beautiful but also serve a purpose, making our environment more livable and sustainable” says Acerbis, whose style is dry and functional but always attractive from a formal point of view.
This approach is reflected in collections such as Cleo and Alabama that the designer created for the same company as well as in MrX.
An innovative idea, a hybrid between architecture and product design that fits perfectly into a historical period in which the individual seems to have just discovered the existence of an outdoor space and the desire to furnish it to enjoy it to the fullest and all year. MrX is a shading system that is unlike any other that has been designed before. When closed, it is a discreet and almost invisible architectural frame, a sort of portal that opens like a compass and becomes a comfortable gazebo to protect yourself from the sun.
A precious element, since today, on a day outdoors, everyone seeks shade. The ADI, Industrial Design Association which organizes and awards the award, has defined its project as “a new type of architectural complement with variable conformation – portal, gazebo – for the comfort of external living spaces, capable of becoming an ordering element of the space beyond what an efficient functional response to the need for shade”. The designer commented on the award as follows: “Winning the Compasso d’Oro is a dream come true. It is the confirmation of years of hard work and dedication in pushing the boundaries of design. I am incredibly honored and motivated to continue creating innovative solutions that improve our daily lives.”
How did the idea of MrX come about, was there any input from Talenti?
My research in the world of design often leads to unexplored territories, in this case a new world for both me and Talenti. We often think that there is nothing left to invent but it is precisely when we reach this realization that we understand that we are on the right path. In the world of outdoor pergolas, I thought that for a company like Talenti whose core business is upholstery, an object outside the established mold was needed, which would tell a different story than usual and so it was.
Could MrX evolve and express itself in other types of outdoor furniture?
If we were to identify the need for a further expansion of the range we could think about it even if the area covered is currently already very generous.
In general, what are the most important features in designing an outdoor space and its furnishings/accessories?
The outdoor space has all the characteristics of the indoor spaces with the addition of covers to protect from rain and sun. Open spaces with great layout alternatives for seats and sofas that are also very beautiful from behind, being the most suitable outdoor space for seeing a product from all its sides. Great comfort and richness of details and finishes with a wide range of accessories that make the space easily livable and functional. There should be no limits to what the outdoors can be as it is now a real space for life and architecture.
