2097 chandelier by Gino Sarfatti and the Taccia table lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

The Flos catalog is an anthology of iconic lights that have made the history not only of lighting but also of the architectural design of private and public spaces. This is thanks to the company’s ability to choose, over time, projects that are significant from a formal point of view and impeccable from a technical point of view. And to propose the historic collections through new editions that respect the project and enhance it with targeted and well-thought-out interventions. Among the latest examples, the two novelties proposed on the latest edition of Euroluce: the new editions of the 2097 chandelier by Gino Sarfatti and the Taccia table lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.

2097 Matte White

2097 is a chandelier designed by Gino Sarfatti in 1958. The historical data is essential to understand the innovative scope of this project: at the time the chandelier par excellence was the one in Murano glass, in which the technical elements were hidden to leave visible just the pure beauty of glass and its reflections. Gino Sarfatti manages to revolutionize this model with a respectful but completely unconventional approach. The metal structure and cables are no longer to be hidden but brought to the fore. A transition from only apparent simplicity since to achieve it it was necessary to identify a valid formal solution, which would make the project not only functional and innovative but also beautiful and elegant, so as not to betray the very nature of the chandelier. But how to give cables and light bulbs an aesthetic dignity? The challenge is important and Sarfatti overcomes it by relying on the elegance of simplicity: the lamp has a central body made up of a metal tube, to which rods are attached, the length of which decreases as they rise upwards to form a sphere.

The rods are offset from each other and at the end have a light bulb with its cable left free to take on a rounded shape that recalls the glass arms of the classic Murano glass. And this is how the magic of a chandelier made spectacular starting from informal, technical materials and elements is accomplished. Almost 70 years old, this sublime example of creativity and research takes on a new look with the Matte White edition introduced by Flos and presented at the latest edition of Euroluce. The format is larger and has up to 75 bulbs and the new color is matt white which is added to the chrome, brass, and matt black.

Taccia Matte White

In 1962 Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed Taccia, a table lamp born from a literally subversive idea: to overturn a ceiling lamp. It consists of two elements with a strong visual impact: the supporting column and the cup-shaped reflector. The first seems to evoke the design of the ancient Greek columns but is actually the result of a technical consideration: the two designers were looking for an element that remained cold and they took the idea from the radiator pipes and their ability to disperse heat.

Compared to when the lamp was designed, the heat problem has now been solved by the LED which also allowed the use of plastic material for the cup-shaped diffuser: this is how the Castiglioni brothers had imagined it but they had diverted to glass just to deal with the heating of the bulb. In the new version presented by Flos on the occasion of the latest edition of Euroluce, Taccia is colored matt white and this new look reinforces the resemblance to the ancient Greek columns, giving the lamp an even more sophisticated and sculptural profile.
